Smith Island, Maryland, USA
Designated Waterway: Chesapeake Bay
The Fog Point Light no longer exists. This lighthouse was located on North-western tip of Smith Island, Maryland.
Located on North-western tip of Smith Island (an isolated community of oystermen and fisherman in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay) at approximately 38.0299° N 76.0417° W; it marked the narrow passage north of Smith Island through Kedges Strait.
This light was constructed on a few acres purchased for $200.00 and was built for $3,500.00 in 1827 by John Donahoo to mark the entrance to the Kedges Strait north of Smith Island. The lighouse was a white house with a stone tower with lantern placed on top of the roof dwelling. Originally equipped with 10 Argand lamps and reflectors, it received a fifth-order Fresnel lens in 1855.
This light's isolated location on swampy ground was cause for concern, and in 1872 a Lighthouse Board report noted it as having little value. In 1875 it was supplanted by the Solomons Lump Light, located a mile-and-a-half northeast, was completed in September 1875. The old light was discontinued and abandoned in 1875, and no trace of it remains.
Researched and written by Catherine (Kitty) Price, a volunteer through the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Light House Society.
